Welcome to Layla Paige's TrinityKids Care Pediatric Hospice Page!
In 2015, Layla Paige Sonnen was thought to be a perfect, healthy, beautiful little baby girl. However, at the age of 6 months, Layla Paige had her first grand mal seizure. After being admitted into Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, it was discovered that she had a rare and undiagnosable brain disorder.
For the next 2 years, Layla received top-rated care from three leading West Coast hospitals – including 19 teams of doctors, nurses and therapists.
Layla fought like a true "Warrior Princess" for 22 months. Toward the end of her life, Layla’s central nervous system started to break down and she began suffering on a daily basis. As her parents, we had a tough time accepting the fact that Layla’s quality of life was slipping. Dr. Glen Komatsu and his team from TrinityKids Care Hospice (“TKC”) helped us realize that instead of prolonging our beautiful baby girl’s life, we were actually prolonging her pain. The TKC team guided us through the toughest time of our lives before Layla ultimately succumbed to her disease on the morning of July 8th, 2017. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Dr. Komatsu and his team of medical miracle workers, Layla was at home, pain free, and in her mother's arms, surrounded by her father and 4-year-old brother, Luke, when she took her final breath.
Our Hero even in death, Layla was able to successfully donate two of her heart valves and both corneas. Her left cornea was successfully transplanted into a 4-year-old girl in the Dominican Republic, and her right cornea was successfully transplanted into a 76-year-old woman in Arizona. Layla was able to give the amazing gift of vision to two people, even when she herself was unable to see due to her disorder. We have also received confirmation that both her heart valves were successfully transplanted into two people. While we don’t know the age, gender, or country of the recipients, we are so grateful to know her heart is beating on, in double time!
Words cannot describe the tremendous debt of gratitude our family owes to Providence TrinityKids Care Hospice. TKC is the only dedicated pediatric hospice program in Los Angeles and Orange counties for infants, children and adolescents with life-limiting illnesses. TKC provides in-home care and support for young patients and their families.
We hope that you will consider honoring Layla's legacy and help us say "thank you" for the incredible care our family received by making a donation to Providence TrinityKids Care Hospice. Together we can continue to support other patients and families who are in similar situations and seeking this much-needed care.
